Coalfield Development in the Canadian North Fork

Thirty years ago, the Sage Creek Coal company announced plans to dig a giant open pit coal mine at the confluence of Cabin and Howell Creeks, just six miles northwest of where the North Fork crosses the international border. Citizen action stopped that adventure, but proposals for coalfield development in the Canadian North Fork continue. The latest is for a coal mine at the Lodgepole Prospect, high in the mountains near the headwaters of the North Fork. During its just concluded 2005 session, the Montana Legislature passed SJ-7, a resolution reaffirming the importance of the North Fork and calling on the International Joint Commission and the Governor of Montana to take specific action.
